Interesting about officing Christopher. One of these days I'm sure I'll return to some sort of office setting...part of it is feeling a tad burned by over-spending on office space for a couple years. That said, I still think that the convenience I can offer with Regus.com with offices everywhere trumps having one "normal" office.

I enjoyed your article very much. I have been solo practitioner for the past 17 years. I have enjoyed a great deal of success in the past, and I must point out one thing: Not having a physical office can prove to be a problem in a few ways.

First, there are many clients who actually want to know that their attorney is an established professional. I do not know why an office confims this in their minds, but it does. Perhaps people need reasuring in this high-tech, virtual everything world of ours. I will admit, it could work if your practice is limited to real estate, landlord-tenant, or some other area of law that does not require significant client contact (initial or ongoing).

Second, It does not pay to attempt to practice in isolation from other, experienced lawyers in the early years. There are too many pitfalls, and trap doors for the uninitiated. Trust me on this.

Third, working with other attorneys is a great way to share office expenses, overhead costs, fears, anxieties, and heroic tales of daring courtroom bravery and triumph. Trust me on this, too!

All of the above notwithstanding, I think you are doing very well, indeed. Keep up the excellent blog!

I'd like to a recommend a billing solution for sole practitioners. It's called Time59 (www.time59.com). It's a web-based solution with time and expense tracking, invoicing, accounts receivable and trust accounting. It's $49.95 per year for unlimited use. There's also a free 30-day trial.
